The Railway Regulation (Gauge) Act 1846[1] introduced mandated standard gauges of 4 feet 8 inches (1,435 mm) for 1⁄2Great Britain, and 5 feet 3 inches (1,600 mm) for Ireland. This signalled the end for Brunel's 7 ft 0 1⁄4 in (2,140 mm) broad gauge network.
